12/6/12

Today we finished part three of the movie. This part was mostly about the manufacturing of cars in China. China didn't have highways until about 20 years ago. I think they recently just started driving cars so that's why. The US gets all their cars from China. They are all manufactured there. Last year there was more than a million cars sold last year.

12/3/12

Today in class we finished part 1 of the movie we're watching and we skipped part 2 so now we're watching part 3. I think its a really interesting movie. In part 3 it talked about how cars are kind of new to China. People used to just ride bikes everyone. So, a lot of older people don't know how to drive cars and are just learning how to drive at age 40. Even though there are less cars in China then there are in America there is more accidents in China. We also saw how one man who has a very good job and it takes a lot of skill gets paid $14 a day on a 77 hour work week. He gets payed better than most people in China but its crazy because his job is so much more advanced then most people but he makes pretty good money for being in China.

11/28/12

Today we finished the movie we started yesterday. Its a pretty interesting movie. It talked about how in China they only make $4.00 a day and usually its hard labor work. The women only make about $2-3 per day. A company in American opened up another company in China and 480 people lost their jobs in America because the Chinese were taking their jobs for this company. Its interesting to see how things like this can affect both of us even though we're competly different countries.

11/26/12

Today I took my test i needed to make up from last Monday. It was an open blog test so it was pretty easy i think i did well. After that Mr. Schick told us we were going to have a speaker tomorrow named Gerry Sandusky and hes going to talk about how tough it is on him and his famliy with him having the same name as Jerry Sandusky, who is one of America's most known pedophile. His family and him gets a lot of hate and death threats also because people mistake him for the other Jerry Sandusky. Then we started watching a movie that seemed like it was going to be about how the different countries all support each other in a certain way but, we ran out of time so we only got about 5 minutes into the movie.

10/18/12

Today in class we had a great conversation about stink bugs. It was actually really gross because I hate stink bugs like more than anything but, everyone was sharing their stink bug stories and it was pretty funny. After stink bug conversation we continued talking about the five major religions. We talked about how Muslims have to stop what they're doing five times a day and bow to the direction of the city Mecca from wherever they were. And then we talked about how Judaism is one of the oldest religions that's still around.

Monday, October 15, 2012

10/15/12

Today in class we finished taking notes on a power point. We talked about ethnic heritage and how the US and Switzerland peacefully merged ethnic groups but, places like Korea and Japan have only one ethnic group and you wouldn't find a very diverse group of people there. Then we went over our classwork from Friday about the five major religions which are Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam and how Jesus didn't start Christianity when he was alive since he was Jewish and how Christianity didn't develop until after Jesus' death.

10/13/12

Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Judaism are three major religions in the world. Christianity was founded in Palestine around 33 AD, Islam was founded in Saudi Arabia around 622 AD, Buddhism was founded in India in the 5th century, Hinduism was founded in India around 2000 BC, and Judaism was founded in Canaan also around 2000 BC. Christianity, Islam, and Judaism are all Monotheistic. There is only one religion that is polytheistic and that is Hinduism. Buddhism is neither because they have more than one god. Judaisms holy books are the Torah, Tankh, and Talmud; Christianity uses a bible; Islam has a Qur'an, Buddhism does not use a holy book; and Hinduism has a Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Epics. Judaism has 14,000,000 followers, Christianity has 2,100,000,000, Islam has 1,500,000,000, Buddhism has 350,000,000, and Hinduism has 1,000,000,000. Each religion has a central figure. Judaism's are Abraham, Isaac, ans Jacob; Christianity is Jesus Christ, Islam is Allah (God), Buddhism is the Buddha, and Hinduism has several gods. There is also a geographical concentration for each religion. Judaism are Israel and the United states; Christianity is mostly in the Western World, Islams are Middle East, Central Asia, South Asia, Northern Africa, Western Africa, Eastern Africa, and Russia and China; Buddhism are Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, Tibet, Southeast Asia, China, Mongolia, Korea, and Japan; Hinduism are of Indian extraction but it is found throughout Asia and Indonesia.

10/11/12

Today there was only one power point left which was the Christopher Columbus group. After they finished Mr. Schick had a power point on what we're going to be learning now. We learned about how the language of a country brings them together and how its important. Like how Spanish brings the Hispanic people together because its how they communicate and get things done in their country. After we talked about language we started Ethnic Heritage but, we didn't get to finish because we ran out of time.

10/10/12

Today in class everyone presented their power points we had to do with our groups. They were about the Native Americans, Columbus, and the Vikings. My group presentation was on the Native Americans. I think we did a pretty good job presenting. When the other groups presented we had to take notes on their power points. The interesting thing about the Native Americans I think were that they arrived here using a land bridge from Russia. The Vikings only stayed in America for about 350 years. Christopher Columbus arrived in 1492 and he was trying to find India but, instead he found America.

10/8/12

Today in class we got back our tests we took on God Grew Tired of Us. I did okay. I didn't fail so thats good. We have a new student named Michael who just came here from Nigeria. He seems really nice and im glad he joined our class. Then we started talking about Columbus Day. We got put into groups and each one of us had to research a topic. Im having trouble finding the answer to my question but im sure i can find one i just have to keep researching for it.

10/5/12

Today in class we took a test on God Grew Tired of Us. Mr. Schick gave us about 15 minutes to look over our notes and ask any questions we had before we started the test. It was pretty busy. Some people told me that it was hard but, it wasn't that bad. We went over out answers and I think I got like 2 wrong but i also spelled some things wrong too. For the rest of class we just talked.

10/4/12

Today each person from the groups talked about which organization they found yesterday and which one we should do. Mr. Schick emailed John and he pays a lot for him to come to us so Mr. Schick thought we should scratch that idea but a lot of people in the class didn't. I think it would work if we could get 100% participation for people to bring in money but i doubt that we would get 100%. The organization I liked the most was the Toms one. Each time you buy a pair of Toms a free pair go to someone in need. I think we should look more into that one. But, if it would be possible to get John to come speak to us then that would probably be the neatest thing. Or even Skype with us maybe.

10/3/12

Today in class we worked on trying to find organizations that can help the people in Sudan. We worked in groups and in my group was Parker, Michael and Austin. Mr. Schick gave us a website to post the links of our organizations we found and everyone could write on the document. The one section got in trouble for editing the sentences and stuff but Mr. Schick trusted us. But then he had to close the document because a few people kept editing it. It was a pretty fun class with my group.

10/1/12

Today we finished God Grew Tired of Us. I really liked that movie. It was so inspiring. It didn't get boring once throughout the movie. At the end of the movie I was almost crying because John got reunited with his mother after 17 years. Panther found some of his family members too but, Daniel never found any of his. Either they were all killed or couldn't be relocated in the refugee camps. I think that's really depressing because Panther and John found their family members and got degrees and everything but Daniel didn't... Panther opened up a school in Sudan and John Bul opened up a medical center. I think we should all write letters to him and try to raise money for his foundation. It would also be really cool to have him contact us in some way like skype!

9/28/12

When we came into class today Mr. Schick wasn't there and then 5 minutes later he still wasn't there so Parker called on the phone to tell them he wasn't in class and then after like 20 minutes he came. He told us a little about the field trip he took his TV production class to and then we continued watching God Grew Tired of Us. The one guy found out his whole family and tribe died and that was really sad. Also, they weren't allowed to walk into stores in a group anymore because someone called the police i guess saying they were sketchy looking but thats wrong. You shouldn't get the police involved unless they really did something which they didn't. The boys were starting to grow apart because they found new friends and went off to college and stuff so that was sad. The whole video is really sad actually. But, its a very inspiring video.

9/27/12

Today we continued the video God Grew Tired of us. It was really interesting. The United Nations had a camp set up for the kids and they could go to school and learn. But, once they finished they really had no place to go to. So the US brought some of the people over to our country. In the video is shows how they had no idea what to do and how different the US is. Like when they were in the airport they didn't know how to go on the escalator and the one guy crushed up Ritz crackers and the poured the milk into the box. It was really sad watching them and seeing how much moving the US probably effected their lives because of how different it is from their country.

9/26/12

Today we got the tests back that we took on Monday. I did a lot better than i expected. I was pretty shocked. We went over the test because Mr. Schick wanted us to make sure we understood everything and to get the right answers because he said this wont be the last time we see this stuff. Then Mr. Schick got mad at us because we kept talking and he walked out of the classroom for a few minutes so we could quiet down. We started watching God Grew Tired of Us again but, we didn't really watch it for that long because we ran out of time.

9/24/12

Today in class we had our first test of the year. It was pretty hard. It had things starting with a Message to Garcia and the CIA World Factbook. Hopefully I didn't fail it but I don't think its going to be my best grade. After everyone finished the test Mr. Schick said we were watching a video for the rest of the class. Usually I hate watching videos because I usually want to fall asleep but this video was really interesting. It was about these boys who tried to escape during this Civil War in Sudan between the Muslims and Catholics. These boys walked all the way to Ethiopia and then once they couldn't stay there anymore they went to Kenya. They started with about 29,000 boys and once they reached Kenya there were only 12,000. It was a really sad video to see that these boys had to live their life like this and try and survive on their own.

9/21/12

Today my group got to present our presentation on Brazil. Eleanor's name got changed to buttface on our power point and it was really funny. But we were kind of laughing throughout the whole presentation and someone wrote "We are just that cool" at the bottom of one of the slides and we're not sure who from our group wrote that so that was funny too. I'm not sure how we did on our presentation...hopefully we passed! Then Mr. Schick talked about the test we're having on Monday which is going to cover everything from the beginning of the year. I'm kind of nervous for it. Hopefully i get a good grade!

Thursday, September 20, 2012

9/20/12

Today in class people presented their projects and most were pretty interesting. Only about 3 people got to present and the last group got cut off by the bell. I guess tomorrow my group will probably go. In everyone's power point they all talked about how in each country the life expectancy for women is longer then men so that information was pretty much the same for everyone. One of the most interesting ones were probably about Nigeria and how its a developed country. I didn't know that. They had some interesting facts. We were supposed to have a test tomorrow but Mr. Schick postponed it until Monday so people can finish their presentations.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

9/19/12

Today we got put into groups to do our first class project. Parker, Olivia, and Eleanor are in my group. We have the best group ever. Our country we're doing is Brazil.

9/17/12

Today was a class where we didn't need our computers. Only our notebooks. Mr.Schick had a power-point ready for us when we came in. I think this was the first "real" notes we've taken so far. We talked about net migration rate, immigration, crude birth rate and a few other things. The life expectancy of the US kind of surprised me. Honestly, I thought it would be more. If you were born in 2012 your life expectancy is to about 70 years. I thought this generation would be at least like a 90 year life expectancy with all the new technology that is improving throughout the years but I guess not. Mr. Schick said that we will probably be having a test either Thursday or Friday of this week.

9/14/12

Today in class we discussed our homework last night which was watching this "Did you know?" video and we had to pick two facts from it. It was like a whole class discussion today. I gave my fact about how India has more honors kids than America has kids and I said the reason is because America is stupid but that was obviously wrong. The right answer was that India just has more kids than us. We also talked about the future and what technology we will have. Mr. Schick said how different listening to music will be in the future and how one day they will probably have a microchip implanted in the brain in order to listen to music. It was pretty funny. Human geo is one of my favorite classes. Everyday our discussions are really fun and interesting.

9/14/12

Today in class my blog got deleted and so did most of the class. It was really frustrating. But anyway we continued discussing the 25 questions and we talked about gas prices and how in Norway gas is $9.69 a gallon. Then we talked about the death birth rate in Africa and we got into talking about birth control and Moh was cracking me up with her comments. Oh and Mr. Schick told us about how he worked on movies like home alone before he was a teacher. I thought that was pretty cool. We have to watch a video and write 2 interesting facts for homework from the video. One interesting fact is India has more honors kids than America has kids. That’s crazy and makes America look really stupid. The second fact is 1 out of 8 couples in the US last year met online. That is just creepy I think.

Wednesday, September 12, 2012

Today in human geo we reviewed the twenty five questions we had to answer last night for homework from the CIA factbook website. It was really interesting to see how different some countries are compared to the US. In Zimbabwe only 95% of people have jobs. I think that's crazy but also so interesting to see that other places have it way worse than we do. Also Russia is the largest country by area but they don't have a lot of population because most places in Russia you cant live in. We said it was a "depressing class" because we talked a lot about nuclear bombs and how America is the only country to ever use a nuclear bomb which killed a lot of people. So today was a pretty interesting class period. I like to learn about how other countries are different than ours.

I thought there was more people who were Roman Catholic because it seems like most people I know are Catholic. I was surprised to see that the US was ranked 18th for HIV deaths because I wasn't aware there were that many people in our country who are affected by HIV in the US.

9/6/12

Today in class we took notes on note taking. Mr. Schick read a paragraph about Illinois and while he was reading it we had to take notes. It talked about how Illinois is the most populated state in the Mid West and how most of the people live in the city of Chicago. Then Mr. Schick told us his story of how he was born and his parents couldn't find a hospital so they had to go to this hospital in a really sketchy neighborhood. Then he joked about how his story was like Jesus and he could be the "Messiah." It was really funny. Today I really enjoyed Human Geo.

Wednesday, September 5, 2012

9/5/12

Today in Human Geo we learned how to post links on the corner of our blog. This helps us to access websites easier. Then we talked about which websites had accurate information for research papers. Most teachers don't like us using Wikipedia but, Mr. Schick said he loves that website but not for it to be our primary source of information. We looked at a few websites that were fake and had wrong information and then we looked at websites that weren't fake so we would know the difference between them.

Essay #3

Over the next four years of my high school career I plan to take on excellence. In middle school I was a horrible procrastinator. I would be stressed and overwhelmed to try and get everything done in one night. I want to try and not do my homework or write my papers all at the last minute. I’m going to try and be more organized.  I want each paper, test, and all my notes to have its own place and not have everything all jumbled together. Studying for each subject every night is something I also want to start doing. To take 10 or 15 minutes for each subject and go over the notes we took that day because that will make me more prepared for class the next day and if there was a pop quiz I could be prepared. I’m not going to let the computer distract me during class or when I’m trying to do homework on it at home. And lastly I want to try and enjoy school the best I can and try and get good grades. So far all my classes keep my attention and I hope it can continue to be that way. I know if I try and follow all these things it will make me a lot more prepared and on top of things for my years at John Carroll.

Essay #2

If Elbert Hubbard traveled into the present I think he would be disappointed in what he saw but I think Socrates would probably be pleased in what it’s like in the year 2012. Elbert Hubbard’s “A Message to Garcia” shows that years ago people were willing to work harder. If someone was asked to deliver a message to someone now they probably wouldn’t want to do it and would complain and ask questions unlike how Rowan did. He took the message right to Garcia without any complaints. It would be really hard to find someone that willing to do something like that in the present day. Socrates however would be pleased to see how much his method has changed what life is like today. Now people have opinions on everything and ask questions. His way of teaching is what has helped us progress over the generations. If they could travel to the present I think it would be very interesting to hear what they would have to say about our way of living.

Essay #1

Arête is a Greek term that is literally translated as “virtue.” It means being the best person you can be and living up to your fullest potential. It’s a word that is associated with bravery, fierceness, and skill. Socrates was an excellent hero in ancient Greek times. He demonstrated arête by showing his belief that the perfect human life should concentrate on self-development. He wanted a person to have their own opinions by using his method, question and answer, which is called the Socratic Method. He taught people a new way of learning which affected the way people lived their lives. The ancient Greeks showed arête by looking down on people who didn’t participate in their politics. They were the first people to have democracy as their government and they wanted everyone to not live their life in private but to be involved. Socrates and the ancient Greeks have changed what life is like today by demonstrating arête.

8/31/12

Yesterday afternoon in class we went over Thursday nights homework which was to define eight Greek terms. I thought the most interesting thing was Socrates's death. He was put on trial for his beliefs. He could have just apologized and said he was sorry and they would have let him go but Socrates stood up for his beliefs and refused to apologize. So they made him drink this poison that's called hemlock and that killed him. I think it was a very heroic act to stand up for something you believe in even if it meant life or death. After we discussed each word we had to define Mr. Schick gave us three essays that have to be posted on our blog before Tuesday. At fist when we talked about it in class I thought the assignment sounded kind of hard but now that i went over the directions again it seems like it shouldn't be too difficult.

8/30/12

Today Human Geography defiantly kept my attention. We read "A Message to Garcia" by Elbert Hubbard. This story was about a man named Garcia who was a general in hiding during the 1800s. Garcia needed a message sent to him but no one knew where he was except for a man named Rowan who knew some information about Garcia. When Rowan was asked to deliver the message he didn't ask any questions he just went and got the job done. The point of the story is that Rowan delivered the message without any hesitation and was determined to get the job done when most people would question the job and probably would want someone else to do it. This shows that back then people were more determined to get their work done weather it had to do with their job or school and nowadays people are more lazy and slack way more. While discussing this story if someone answered the question right then Mr. Schick would give them a doughnut and at the end he gave everyone a doughnut but i didn't take one. With the few minutes left in class we talked about plagiarism and how serious it is. I am looking forward to see what we will be doing tomorrow in class.

8/29/12

Today we didn't do much in class because a lot of people were still having trouble with their blogs. While Mr. Schick went around to help people I customized my blog a little and changed my Google chrome theme.  After that we talked for a while and once everyone had their blog set up Mr. Schick gave us our first homework assignment. The homework is to define eight ancient Greek terms.
arête- being the best person you can be
Socrates- he was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher. hes one of the founders of Western philosophy and taught Plato and Xenophon
the death of Socrates- he was condemned to death by having to drink hemlock
the Socratic method- created by Socrates and is a m
polis- a city in Greece ethod of teaching by question and answer
the date 508 BC-  Kleisthenes reforms Athenian code of laws and establishes a democratic constitution

And if the ancient Greeks called you an idiot it meant you were disinterested in their politics

Today in class we talked about what Human Geo would be like this year. We got assigned seats and Mr. Schick joked about how we were the smart class because we got our seats right the first time. We discussed the syllabus which I found very interesting.  It definitely helped me to know more about that class then when I first walked in.  Every day after we have class we have to post on our blog and talk about what we did that day.  Mr. Schick explained to us about how he teaches in three different locations so we know where to find him during different times of the day in case we have a question. The only supplies we really need in Human Geo are our Tablet PC, a pen or pencil, and a composition notebook to take notes. This is one of the classes I think I will definitely be looking forward to this year.

First Day

On Thursday morning when my alarm clock went off I woke up nervous for my first day of high school.  Once I arrived at school, I started to feel excited and a little relieved when I saw a few familiar faces.  We had breakfast in the cafeteria and then went off into the auditorium for a few speeches from some of the faculty. The teachers made me feel a lot better about the day because they seemed so nice and welcoming. After we went to the auditorium I went to my advisory.  I had a problem opening my locker but after I tried about 20 times, I finally got it which was such a relief. After lunch the freshman attended their modified schedules for a C day. I was extremely nervous for this part because we had to find our classrooms by ourselves which ended up not being very hard at all. Mr. Schick was very welcoming and his class seems like it’s going to be a lot of fun.  Also Mrs. Magner was very nice and had a great personality. I can’t wait to get into what we’ll be learning in Spanish this year considering Spanish is one of my favorite subjects. I met tons of new people on Thursday and I can’t wait to see everyone again on Monday. What I thought would be a very nervous day for me turned out to be a fun, exciting day.
